This volume is associated with an exhibition of the same name that was curated by Adele Coscarella at the Museo del Presente in Rende, Calabria, in 2008. While the exhibition and accompanying texts lamented the exclusion of southern Italy from major exhibitions on the Lombards, its targeted audience was more public and local than scholarly and international. The show sought to bring to life the Lombards of southern Italy and today’s archaeological practices, and utilized videos and newer multimedia technologies to do so. This volume, edited by Giuseppe Roma, is a scholarly postscript to the Rende project. It contains up-to-date research on a variety of materials and reflects the five themes of the exhibition: migration, archaeology, centers of power, religious buildings, and burial sites.  (From "Speculum" October 2014)
