The huge corpus of the sculptures from Roman Aquileia (2000 ca. items estimated) is far from being thouroghly analyzed. Some best known collections, moved from Aquileia to Trieste, or Buttrio, or Torviscosa (in the XIX or XX century) were recently published in the CSIR series; a more detailed study should be afforded about the sculptures transferred to Vienna, when the Adriatic town was still part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Anyway, the majority of the monuments is preserved in the National Archaeological Museum of Aquileia, but its catalogue is lacking, either published (V. Scrinari’s one dates back to the ‘70s), or electronic: all the steps towards such an achievement are traced.
An important task of Museum’s activity, involving sculpture as well, consists in ameliorating the exhibition, with due regard to the museographic criteria inherited by former Directors: a short revue of the innovations is made.
Besides new findings, restorations offer new insights in some even recently studied sculptures.
